ETIAS Explained - EU Will Soon Require Visas For Non-EU Citizens Entering Europe

HOT-HOT-HOT: If you are planning travel to the EU (Europe) in 2024 or beyond, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO APPLY FOR A VISA well before you make your travel plans!

The new and poorly implemented EU ETIAS Program will require a visa for citizens of all non-EU countries entering the EU starting SOMETIME in 2024 (date has not been announced - 2024 is rapidly approaching).

You may stay for a MAXIMUM of 90 days in any 180 day period, same as Americans and many others can do now without a visa.

If you want more information, click on this link for a long, complicated explanation of the ETIAS Program:

Tavira (Faro) Portugal: Good Seafood and Decent Italian in an Open-Air Space Overlooking the Gilão River

A Casa di Carlo e Franco
Edifício Doca R1 Quatro Águas 4 Águas Road
Tavira 8800-418 Portugal
+351 911 817 099
Prices: €€€€
Adjacent to the Gilão River in Tavira's Quatro Águas area is an unassuming restaurant you would nt know was there if you were not looking for it. An open air building with a covered terrace, the views of the river and Quatro Águas  is scenic and relaxing.

Our friends asked us to join them on a warm Sunday afternoon for lunch, having told us it was a very good Italian restaurant. Although the owners are Italian and they have a few Italian dishes, the focus here is on seafood as one might expect.
We started with the Couvert, bread butter and olives (€3.50) and two Bruschetta (€6.50), one with tomatoes and one without. The bruschetta were not traditional in the Italian sense, coming with melted mozzarella, but were very tasty, although, a bit pricey for a slice of bread, diced tomato, and cheese.
My wife and I are not huge seafood lovers, but our friends had the Frittura Mista (€22.00) - prawns, mussels, clams, octopus and veggies - and the Seafood Salad (€22.00) - similar ingredients, but not fried - which they both enjoyed very much.

My wife ordered the Spaghetti and Clams (€14.00) that, having been born in Sicily and growing up in Napoli, she liked it very much.
I decided on the Saltimbocca alla Romana (€15.00), one of my favorite dishes, normally veal scallops topped with prosciutto in a sage and butter (or EVO) sauce. It came with fries, rice or mashed potatoes, but I requested a side of spaghetti aglio e olio (garlic and EVO) instead, they were happy to oblige. Instead of veal scallops, they used extremely thinly sliced beef and, instead of prosciutto, it was topped with cooked ham (prosciutto cotto). It was tasty nonetheless, but did not compare my favorite served at La Piazza in Santa Barbara de Nexe.

The meal was very good, the company wonderful, and the scenery sublime, although, at €35 a head, I cannot say it was a great value for lunch.

Olhão, Faro, Portugal: Bom Dia Tourists, Come Fill-Up Our Parking Lot While You Spend The Day At The Beach

Continente Bom Dia Olhão
R. Patrão Joaquim Casaca 2
8700-507 Olhão, Portugal

Prices: €€€€
In general, we like shopping at Continente Bom Dia. The staff are mostly friendly and helpful and they have many of the day-to-day basics.

However, there are a few things that desperately need improving ...

1. I know that the 'Bom Dia' stores are smaller than many Continentes, but the selection does not compare to the nearby Pingo Doce and Aldi.

2. Staff need to learn some manners and receive 'customer service' training. I cannot tell you how many times employees cut in front of me around the store, some nearly pushing me out of the way to get wherever it is they are going. Customers come first and staff should be more polite when out around customers in the store, making way for us rather than expecting us to get out of their way. This is not just a Continente problem, it is a Portuguese problem, because I experience this contempt for customers nearly everywhere I go.

3. There is not a single employee that speaks English. I understand that we live in Portugal and not everyone is expected to speak English or other languages, but this store is in an area frequented by an enormous number of tourists, especially in summer, most of whom do not speak Portuguese and the majority of which speak at least some English. WHich brings me to my final point.

We live across the street from Continente Bom Dia in Olhão. It is impossible for us regular customers to find a parking place to shop there because the store manager does not control the parking lots, allowing well over 100 cars of tourists going to the islands and the area to block the spaces all day long in the summer (see photo #1).

In the off-season, as you can see from the second photo, there is hardly ever a car in the rooftop lot and there are never more than 25-30 ACTUAL customers in the building during the summer. We customers cannot find a parking place because of this absurd practice, so where are we supposed to park?

Management should post a one hour time limit for 'customer' parking and threaten that vehicles 'will be towed' if the time limit is exceeded, then, mark tires with chalk and tow offenders. This practice would stop very quickly if management was concerned about regular customers and implemented an effective deterrent such as this.
