Euro for euro, Vincent provides a high quality, expertly prepared French meal in one of the least likely and hard to spot locations in the Algarve, but it is worthy the hunt. Down a side road, more like an alley, off of the main waterfront road in Santa Luzia, you will spot the bistrot if you look hard enough. Outside it is nothing special, but inside it is a quaint, candle-lit, French country bistrot right out of a movie.
Vincent, the owner and chef, has been in the same location for 18 years and he is only open for dinner (reservations recommended) from Saturday through Thursday. Starters include traditional French Onion Soup (4.50), but I had the Goat's Cheese and Tomato Tart (5.00) which was absolutely delicious. Baked cheese atop a crispy brioche sitting on freshly sliced tomato and surrounded by fresh lettuce leaves and sliced cherry tomatoes tossed in a light balsamic vinaigrette, 5 euros was a definite TravelValue for this starter.
I wanted the Grilled Ribeye Steak (16.00), but I could not decide between the bernaise and roquefort sauces, so Vincent said, "Voila, I shall give you a little of both" ... HOOAH! The steak was tender and perfectly cooked 'medium' without a gram of gristle and accompanied by a cup of crispy baked potato cubes and sauteed green beans. The bernaise sauce was delish, but the roquefort sauce was sublime, I was in heaven!
Having arrived a little after 6pm, I was the only one dining as it was a little early bu European standards, so Vincent came out and chatted while my dishes were being prepared. He is a one man show, being the maitre d', chef, server, and cashier, and he does a great job at all.
