The place was packed on a Sunday night, a good sign, the service friendly and efficient, and the food muy bueno (that's "very good" for you gringos). The chips were made in-house and warm like the should be and the salsa was NOT out of a container with a spicy kick that burned the lips just a tad. 

With Negro Modelo on tap, a 25 ounce glass was just $6.50, a relative bargain and much welcome after 8 hours on the links in Napa Valley. I also ordered a "side" of guacamole ($1.50 - not wanting the $7.99 family order for just me), being disappointed by the size at just over a thimbleful when it arrived.

The two crispy tacos ($3.99 each) had shredded beef and the corn tortillas toothpick holes where they were held together while deep fried. Unlike recent experiences at so called Mexican restaurants in the Portland area, the tacos were not dripping with grease and the shells were not pre-fab, holding up in one piece until completely devoured. YUM!

The cheese and onion enchilada ($3.99) was large and full of cheese and the sauce homemade, not out of a can. It was delicious, but, unfortunately, not as hot (temperature wise) as it could have been. I saved $3 and several hundred calories by foregoing the rice and beans and ordering à la carte.

Had the side of guacamole had been a bit larger, the enchilada a touch warmer, and the wait for my meal somewhat shorter, they would have received my highest rating.

What can one say about Yosemite that has not already been said ... majestic, stunning, gorgeous, fantastic, incredible ... the list of adjectives describing our most beautiful National Park is endless so I shall stop there.

The sheer cliffs of Half Dome and El Capitan and the endlessly tall waterfalls like Bridal Veil only add to the awe inspiring beauty of the park. Arrive near sunset like we did in early June and the ranger stations are unmanned, allowing free entry into the park with well over an hour to spare before sunset. to take in the sights. You can also stay for days on end, reserving a spot in one of their numerous campgrounds.

The valley floor is inhabited by wildlife galore, not including the annoying two-legged variety, with open meadows, rushing rivers, and springs that form creeks right before your very eyes. You can relax and enjoy the serenity, hike until you drop, ride bikes along quiet paths, or climb (or fall) thousands of feet on th sheer cliffs that surround the enormous valley.

Beside the enormous and unfathomable splendor of the Grand Canyon, I doubt you will find more impressive natural beauty anywhere else in the World. Yosemite National Park is a national treasure and surely should not be missed.

The restaurant is simple, a nice little place in a strip mall near the southern edge of town. The service is friendly and efficient, and the food made to order. The chef readily agreed to substitute chicken with pork for the schnitzel cordon bleu ($17.95), but they would have received 7-8 Bombs Out Of 10 had they fulfilled my request for a little Hunter sauce (gravy) with the cordon bleu I ordered. When a customer makes a request, it should be fulfilled. It's not that hard to whip up a little gravy, particularly when you are pan frying the schnitzel anyway.

My wife had the Fried Spätzel ($13.95), a huge skillet full of spätzel, ham, Gruyere cheese, saüerkraut, and fried onions all mixed together. It was a lot of food, very unique, and quite good. Fresh bread and a cream cheese spread with spices accompanied the meals.

As I mentioned, I had the schnitzel (pork) cordon bleu with fried potatoes and sweet and sour red cabbage. The dinner came with soup or salad and bread, so I ordered the beef goulash soup which was a bit greasy, as it should be, but good. The potatoes were good, the cabbage OK (I'm not a huge fan of German red cabbage), and the cordon bleu very well prepared except for the fact that it was extremely dry. A little hunter sauce (mushroom gravy) would have rounded out the dish quite nicely, but it was not meant to be.

The beer comes in bottles, nothing on tap, and is a bit pricy ($5.25-$5.95) for a 12-16 ounce bottle of beer. The house wine is $5.25 a glass and the glass was quite generous, a much better value than the beer. We enjoyed our meal and the chef obviously knows how to prepare German food, but a little more flexibility, not an easy thing for many Germans (I'm half German, so I know all too well), would have gone a long way.

Good, authentic, reasonably priced  Mexican food in a mall food court. Go figure.

I had difficulty finding this place until I realized that it was in the Bayshore Mall food court. As you are looking at the front of the mall, the food court is inside the glassed-in area between the middle and left end of the mall. You will find Los Gallos immediately straight ahead on the right.

Wanting to sample a variety of Mexican staples, I ordered the guacamole and chips  ($3.75), a carne asada and a carnitas taco with cheese ($2.50 each), and a cheese and onion enchilada ($2.50) ala carte. The guacamole was fair at best, obviously from Sysco or cut with yogurt or sour cream and with too many tomatoes which are cheaper than avocados, a trick many restaurants use to same money.

The tacos were authentic and tasty with two medium size soft corn tortillas each, sliced grilled steak/pork, onion, cilantro, salsa and cheese (actually, cheese is not authentic on tacos, but I like it) with plenty of meat. The enchilada was also very good with a zesty red chili sauce, with plenty of cheese and diced onion.

For under $12, I ate very well and, with the exception of the guacamole, the food was good, not great, and plentiful. I am always amazed that most Mexican restaurants cannot seem to make a decent guacamole because it is very simple to make and at 50¢ to $1 per avocado, the profit margin is still 300-400% using only avocadoes and no fillers. FINALLY, after 8 years of mediocre Midwest Mexican food, I found a real Mexican restaurant and I had to return to California to find it!

La Patria is unassuming and simple with 8-10 tables, one waitress, one cook, and great food. As soon as I sat down, a small (complimentary) bowl of refried beans topped with cheese arrived along with freshly made chips and both red and green homemade salsas. Draft beer is $3.50 and an order of guacamole is $3.95.

They have everything you would expect, including carnitas, carne asada, fajitas, tacos, rellenos, enchiladas, tostadas, burritos, tamales and so on, but they had a few things I had not seen before in 59 years of loving Mexican food. Gorditas and sopes, both coming in a baked masa (corn meal) enclosure, the gorditas more like a round sandwich and the sopes similar to a tart pastry shell. Both are filled with refried beans, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, and your choice of meat (carne asada, carnitas, shredded or ground beef, and chicken among others - fish, shrimp, lamb and goat are $2 more). 

For $10.49 you get your choice of a soft taco, crispy taco, super taco, enchilada, chili relleno, tamale, burrito, tostada, gordita, or sope (choose any two - any meat) with rice and beans. I had a super taco (a large, fried flour tortilla filled with shredded beef, lettuce, tomato, cheese and guacamole) and a gordita with carnitas. The super taco shell was a bit greasy, not surprising as flour tortillas do not deep fry quite as well as corn, but it was massive, filling and delicious. The gordita was excellent, not greasy at all with the crispy masa halves filled with carnitas and the other yummy ingredients.

The place is simple, the service excellent, the food delicious, and the prices very reasonable. What more can you ask for in a Mexican restaurant ... FINALLY!
