Vancouver, WA: Victoria's Was Victorious In Demosntrating Their Mediocrity

Victoria's Cafe
2626 E Evergreen Blvd Vancouver, WA 98661
(360) 836-8993
Prices: $$$$

There were just a few people scattered throughout the dining room as I stood at the counter waiting to be seated, but the lad behind the counter was busy bussing tables and cleaning in the back. I stood there for close to five minutes.
He was equally as slow bringing me my coffee ($4) and taking my order (Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs ($20), but then things improved a bit.
The chicken fried steak was decent, but instead of being ¨smothered¨ with country gravy, there was only enough to barely cover the top. I was going to ask for more, but I did not want to wait forever and let my breakfast get cold.

It is a cute little place, but the service could have been better, the food was average, and the prices were a tad steep.

Washougal, WA: Great Service, Tasty Food, Healthy Portions and Reasonable Prices ... HOOAH!

Peggy’s Place
3010 Evergreen Way
Washougal, WA 98671
Phone number (360) 210-5500
Website: None
Facebook Page
Prices: $$$$

Peggy's has more traditional breakfasts and is a better value than the other breakfast and lunch (only) spot in Washougal. No metrosexual, foo foo menu options here, just good ol' traditional omelettes, scrambles, bacon and eggs, biscuits and gravy, French toast, and pancakes as well as burgers, sandwiches and a few entrees on their lunch menu. What you see is what you get.

I had the Classic Breakfast ($9), coming with two eggs over medium, hash browns, two slices of bacon, and an English muffin and a half-order of Biscuits and Gravy ($5). The eggs were perfectly cooked as was the bacon, but the hash browns, although plentiful, were not a crispy as I had asked for. The biscuit was large and tasty, and the gravy delicious, but, unfortunately, the biscuit was too large for the bowl, so there was not enough gravy and I ended up leaving almost half of the biscuit.

My wife ordered the French Toast ($8), arriving with four large halves of bread coated with a crispy egg batter, then grilled, and came with two slices of their yummy bacon. It also came with cups of fluffy, whipped cinnamon-honey butter and fresh maple syrup. My wife was one happy camper.

We even got complimentary bites (small squares) of their key lime and brownie cakes along with a pleasant Happy Easter after our meal. The service was excellent and the food came out post haste, quicker than I had expected for a new place with a decent size Easter Sunday crowd. The room is large, clean and open, and they have obviously spent a fair amount on renovations with four large booths, six four-top tables, and a lunch counter that seats about eight. They need some more stuff on the walls to make it feel more homey, but that will come with time.

I hear that their cheesecake is delightful, but at $8 per slice, I was not inclined to give it a try given the price and my satiated state. Their prices are fair for the most part, but at $8 for a whole order of Biscuits and Gravy and for a slice of cheesecake, I would say both are overpriced by at least a couple of bucks. I would also recommend giving a 10% Military/Veterans Discount and maybe a free meal for Vets on Veteran's Day, something no other Washougal restaurants currently offer.

Vancouver, WA: Solid, For A Chain, Breakfast And Service ... The Decor Is Another Story

Biscuits Cafe
1801 SE 164th Avenue, Suite 103
Vancouver, WA 98683
Phone number: (360) 718-2293
Prices: $$$$

The place ain't much to look at, but the service was great, the food pretty damn good, and the prices fair. What more could you ask for ... ambiance?
In a strip mall, the floor is bare, the tables and chairs unimpressive, but functional and the decor nearly non-existent. Fortunately, we were not eating the decor. I was a bit concerned because the staff all looked very young, but they were actually quite impressive ... very friendly, efficient and professional. The also have a few large wrought iron tables out front, but being a cool Fall morning, we decided to eat in.
One Biscuit & Gravy Combo ($8.95*)
We arrived about an hour before my son needed to be at the airport (15 minutes away) for his flight home and there was a short wait when we arrived, but the hostess quickly seated us when I told her about our dilemma (we were next on the list BTW). She even brought us water and had our server Holly stop by post haste.
Country Fried Steak and Eggs ($12.99*)
My son had the Country Fried Steak and Eggs ($12.99*) and it looked pretty good, a fact he confirmed as he wolfed his breakfast down. My wife went with the Keeping It Simple ($8.95*), where you pick three items from a choice of 27 items, selecting French toast, hash browns and apple juice. She seemed pleased and was full when we left, so problem there you have it. I had the One Biscuit & Gravy Combo ($8.95*) , coming with a biscuit and gravy (obviously), two eggs (over-medium) and three slices of bacon, adding a side of hash browns for an additional $2.49*, a bit pricey I thought, but it was a massive portion. With a name like "Biscuits" Cafe, you would think the biscuits would be big and awesome, but mine was rather small although it was light and flaky as it should be. The country gravy was good, not great, the eggs perfectly cooked, the bacon just a tad too crispy, and the hash browns big, crisp (I ordered them that way) and tasty.
Keeping It Simple ($8.95*) - French toast, hash browns and apple juice
Holly was a delight, keeping us apprised of our order's status, keeping our coffees topped-off, delivering our food relatively quickly, even bringing the check ASAP so we could pay and get to the airport as soon as needed. Which brings me to my main concern, the reception/cashier's station which created a bit of a choke point at the entrance/exit. I think things would flow quite a bit better, especially when busy, adding a touch of sophistication if you paid your server vice having to walk up to the cashier to pay while they are trying to simultaneously take the names of customers coming through the door.

Lawrence, Kansas: Best Breakfast Value, Most Arrogant Staff in Town

WheatFields Bakery Café
904 Vermont Street
Lawrence, KS  66044

Phone: 785.841.5553
Web: www.WheatfieldsBakery.com
Hours:
Monday through Friday - 6:30am to 8:00pm
Saturday 6:30am to 6:30pm
Sunday - 7:30am to 4:00pm
Prices: $$$$

I love a good, hearty breakfast, but because bacon, eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy are not as healthy as they are tasty, we normally only indulge on special occasions. I reviewed Wheatfields, a bakery and restaurant one block West of Mass Street in downtown Lawrence, on my birthday last year after going there for breakfast. Coincidentally, my wife and I returned for breakfast yesterday on my 60th birthday, enjoying ourselves and allowing me to reassess the rating I gave them last year (6 Bombs Out Of 10 ... More Bombs Are Better!).

My wife and I have been buying Wheatfields wonderful breads since we moved to Lawrence a little over three years ago. My favorite is the raisin and pecan sourdough ($4.50), a robust torpedo-shaped loaf with a thick crispy crust outside and plenty of raisins and pecan pieces inside. It toasts marvelously and is delicious alone, with butter, or coated in my favorite toppings, peanut butter and bananas.
They have numerous varieties, including sourdough, semolina with sesame and poppy seeds, baguette, ciabatta, Kalamata olive, sourdough, and 100% whole wheat among others. Breads range in price from $4 to nearly $9 for their holiday specials, but the whole wheat with walnuts and raisins is just HALF the price of a similar loaf at a new East Lawrence bakery on Barker, being quite a good value.

You order at the counter immediately in front of you as you enter, pay, and are given a small sign to place on your table so the servers can bring your order to the correct table. Drinks are help-yourself with three varieties of coffee (two regular and one decaf) and a small selection of teas and fountain drinks.
Always keeping it simple, I went with the Classic Breakfast (#1 - $6.95), coming with two eggs, hash browns, toast, and sausage links or bacon (I went with the bacon of course). They raised their price a buck since last year, but it is still the cheapest breakfast in Lawrence. Adding a half order of biscuits and gravy (#5 - $4.25, up 50¢) brought my very hearty and delicious breakfast to a little over $11, very reasonable compared to other downtown breakfast spots. Not a big egg or meat eater, my wife had a scone and coffee. She loves their scones and was quite happy with this cheese and herb variety.
Our meals arrived very quickly, even before I was done pouring coffee and toasting my bread. The Classic Breakfast was excellent with the eggs cooked perfectly over-medium, the bacon crispy and not burnt, but the hash browns were not as crunchy as I like them. The half order of biscuits and gravy was plenty for me with a very large biscuit smothered in a thick, savory country gravy with loads of sausage. The coffee was hot, obviously fresh, and delicious.
As breakfast goes, I have had better, but we enjoyed our meal and I have to say that you will not find a better breakfast value in Lawrence. Wheatfields is a very popular meeting place with great bread, excellent coffees, and tasty breakfasts. They seem to do very well because the place is almost always full.
My only gripe is with the staff who seem to have an "attitude". There is no "Hi, welcome to WheatFields" when you come in, it is more like "Yea, what do you want". Employees are routinely impersonal and abrupt, not warm and inviting. A smile and occasional "thank you" from staff would be much appreciated.
