Mesquite, NV: You Are My Gyro Chicago Greek!

Chicago Greek
355 W. Mesquite Boulevard, Suite B-30
Mesquite, NV 89027
Phone: (702) 613-5017
Website: None
Prices: $$$$

In a relatively deserted strip mall south of I-15, Chicago Greek stands out not just with their colorful sign, but with their fresh, tasty food, friendly service, and quaint Santorini-like atmosphere.
You have to order at the counter when you enter with a full view of the small, but spic-n-span kitchen. They offer several traditionally Greek specialties such as saganaki, a variety of gyros, spanakopita, and souvlaki along with some American favorites, most notably the Italian roast beef sandwich, a Chicago tradition.
I ordered the Classic Gyro ($7.29) with a generous helping of their sliced beef/lamb combo, fresh tomato, of which there could have been more of, sliced red onion, and homemade tzatziki on a large, thick, soft, and fresh pita. They offer an order of fries and a soft drink, along with your sandwich purchase, for an additional $2.50 and I went for broke ... HOOAH!
The sandwich was delicious and filling and the fries hot and crispy, right out of the fryer, with a tasty seasoning that I could not quite put my finger on. Who cares, they were great!
For $10, not including tip, it was one of the better meals I have had in recent memory dollar for dollar, so I recommend you get your hiney over to Chicago Greek, otherwise, you are a malaka.

If they offered table service, some wine, beer, and/or Ouzo, and put more tomatoes on their gyro, they likely would have received my highest rating ... OPA!

Tel Aviv, Israel: It Was Much Shwarma Than Expected In December

Yashka Shwarma
Dizengoff Street 105, Tel Aviv, Israel
Fast Food, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern
Phone: +972 3-505-7632
Website: Yashka.co.il
Prices: ₪₪₪₪

A block north of Dizengoff Square and two blocks from our Airbnb, we found Yashka Shawarma. We saw the staff loading soft, luxurious pita bread with mounds of chicken, turkey, veggies, and sauces and the result looked outrageous, so we approached only somewhat cautiously being our first night in a new country where the alphabet and language are very unfamiliar.

The very nice, young gentleman at the register spoke decent English, making the ordering process somewhat quicker and much easier. For me it was the grilled chicken pita, which came with a side of crispy, greasy fries and all the pickled pickles and salad I wanted from the small salad bar next to the counter (₪33 - $8.75). The chicken was grilled before our eyes and placed on the soft pita with a choice of tomato, cucumber, onion, cabbage, humus, an unknown sauce, and more. The sauce, I later found out, was tahini and it was delicious. The Coke Zeros (₪10 - $2.65) were very cold and came in a tall, slim can.

On our second visit, I ordered the shwarma (₪46 - $12.15on laffa (like a massive wrap) instead of the pita, a much better value, especially if you are hungry ... very hungry. I got the recommended turkey and veal combination with tomato, onion, cucumber, humus, tahini and chili sauce. Coming with a side of greasy fries and the side salad bar, I had more than enough for two meals ... HOOAH!

At first I thought it was a bit pricey, but the quality, quantity, and taste were all excellent and I was stuffed. Overall, it was a very well run and efficient establishment and, as I found out, a pretty darn good meal and a decent value for Tel Aviv where food and drink prices rival London and Paris.

Lawrence, KS: Shop Or Dine-In If Craving Mediterranean Specialties

Mediterranean Market & Cafe
3300 Bob Billings Pkwy
Lawrence, KS 66049
Phone: (785) 842-9383
Website: mediterraneancafelw.com/salads
Prices: $$$$

A very nice little market with plenty of choices and reasonable prices. Their selection of products from all around the Mediterranean is impressive considering the store is not all that big.

They also serve food for take-out or you can sit at one of the small tables and enjoy your meal. They serve gyros with tzatziki sauce ($5.99), falafel with Tahini ($.5.99), hummus, baba ghannooj, shawarma, and many salads, sides, and traditional entrees such as moussaka and spinach pie.

The service is always efficient and friendly, so drop in if you are looking for a quick meal or a special ingredient for that special Mediterranean dish.

The Pita Pit Is THE PITS When It Comes To Value

Pita Pit
1011 Massachusetts St
Lawrence, KS 66044

Prices: $$$$$

The place was empty on a Wednesday night as I entered, a bad sign, and I almost turned around to go to Fuzzy's for some tacos. Instead I decided to give it a go and walked to the counter.

The staff was friendly and helpful, the place clean, the veggies fresh, and being Wednesday I was told that "double meat's only an extra buck" ($1 - normally $2.50), so I ordered a Philly Steak with grilled onion, peppers, and mushrooms for $6.59 ($7.59 + tax with double meat, bringing the total to $8 and change - normally $9.09 + tax).

With more meat than Subway, I thought the sandwich would be more filling than it was. They offer white and whole wheat pita, but being so thin the bread offers little satiation. I was still hungry. The extras (veggies, cheeses, sauces) are included and are liberally added, but the pita bread can only hold so much before bursting. In fact, the pita fell apart halfway through my sandwich as the juices attacked the bread less than 20  minutes after ordering.

For $8+ I was not pleased with the value of the sandwich. They offer chips on the side to accompany sandwiches, but french fries would be more appropriate and filling. Overall, I found my experience and the value of my meal disappointing.
