There are three restaurants on Turisti Street in Bugibba just a stone's throw from the other - La Sorpresa, La Stalla and now ... Ta Pawla - all with reasonably priced, three-course Set Menus, inexpensive wines, great service and excellent food.
La Sopresa and La Stalla both have €14 set menus, including starter (soup, pasta, stuffed mushrooms, etc.), main course (rib eye steak with mushroom gravy, bragiolini, chicken cordon bleu, etc.), and choice of dessert. A bottle of sparkling (or still) water is €3 (.75L) and a nice Maltese bottle of wine in the €7 to €12 range (and up).
Ta Pawla is pretty much identical, very good food, same basic menu, equal drink prices, nice environment, and good service, except they charge €16.90 for their set menu, nearly €3 more than the other two nearby restaurants.
My wife had the Maltese Platter for her starter with plenty of soft, local Pecorino, olives, cucumber, carrots, bell pepper, lettuce, rucola (minus the tomato - she is allergic). I liked their pasta choice better than the other two which offer only spaghetti Bolognese. Their pasta was a local variety and prepared in the Maltese way with local sausage, cheese and sauteed onion with tomato.

My wife had the polpette, meatloaf in the shape of a thick hamburger patty topped with brown gravy and accompanied by fries (chips) and salad. Both were as good as any we had tried elsewhere.
My bragiolini ("olives" or involtini - thinly sliced beef rolled around sausage and/or ham, cheese, egg, olives, and/or spices) were also very good, accompanied by nicely roasted potatoes and vegetables.
Dessert was either coffee or a Maltese tart filled with fig and topped with either chocolate or vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and drizzled with chocolate sauce. We went with the sweets rather than stay awake all night (coffee at 10PM?) and we were glad we did ... YUM!
The food was very good, the environment rustic and warm, and the service excellent, but honestly, I am not sure it was worth the extra €3 compared to the two previously mentioned neighbors.
